Signs of Spirit
Looking for a Gender Transcendent Pronoun for Spirit
by Debra Redalia
Larry and I have been running into a problem as we write about being spirits in English.
The other day we stopped ourselves and just got stuck when we realized we had written: “arrive in the future he or she had created.”
Well, no. A spirit is neither a he or a she because spirit has no gender. Bodies have gender, but spirit has no gender.
We said to each other “We need a gender-neutral pronoun.”
So we searched for “gender-neutral pronoun” thinking we were not the first to run into this. And, in fact, we weren’t. Search on “gender-neutral pronoun” and you will find many opinions including examples from the past. Apparently, in the beginning of English, everyone was an “it.” It was until later that humans were distinguished in language as masculine or feminine with pronouns.
But then we soon realized that a pronoun that included both masculine and feminine was not what we were looking for either. Because spirit is not gender-neutral, it is gender-transcendent.
We want to be able to write "“arrive in the future [spirit] had created” with [spirit] replaced by a pronoun.
This is where we find ourselves. Spirit is so unknown and so unacknowledged in the modern world that there are no pronouns for it.
We have already been speaking and writing from a spirit viewpoint, such as using “I” to refer to ourselves—spirits—and not to our bodies. So we say, for example, “My body is cold,” instead of “I am cold.” It’s more accurate. But now we see we need additional vocabulary.
Let’s figure this out together. We welcome your comments on this.

DEBRA & LARRY REDALIA found each other as soulmates in 1987. Though they each were already aware they were spiritual beings when they met, their spiritual journey really began when they started helping each other discover the characteristics of spirit and put them into practice in daily life. Since 2005, Debra and Larry have been writing Signs of Spirit stories—first person accounts of their true life adventures as spiritual belings. The are co-founders of Spirits Bright and The Signs of Spirit Project.
