The Daily Spirit

Spirit is the basis of all life—from our human lives to life-as-a-whole.

Yet in our industrial-consumer world, there is very little awareness of the existence of spirit and even less knowledge of its functions in the ongoing creation and maintenance of life.

My intent for The Daily Spirit is to have a place to explore and communicate about the nature of spirit with a result of creating a world where the living functions of spirit are acknowledged, understood, honored, respected and used by everyone as a natural and normal function of everyday life.

Please feel free to comment on, question, and discuss anything you read here. Please communicate.

We have observed for ourselves that we are each an expression of one Whole Spirit, and as such we each have a right and responsibility to be self-determined about every aspect of our lives. It is about being the spirit that is our birthright and using our abilities for good in the world.

Meeting My Soulmate

“Over the Town” by Marc Chagall. "I suddenly felt as if we were taking off. You too were poised on one leg, as if the little room could no longer contain you. You soar up to the ceiling. Your head turned down to me, and turned mine up to you... We flew over fields of flowers, shuttered houses, roofs, yards, churches." That’s how Marc Chagall’s fiancée, Bella Goldenberg, remembered the elation of their engagement history. More about the painting.

If you ask a happily married person how they knew their husband or wife was “the one” they often say, “You just know.” And that’s exactly right. When I met Larry, I knew. I just knew. It wasn’t about making a list of everything I wanted. He didn’t match the kind of man I thought I wanted to marry. But I knew he was right for me in a way that wasn’t about physical facts and I turned out to be so right. Because he was right for me in a ways I wasn’t even aware of yet when we met.

I didn’t begin to date until I was in college and didn’t have my first real relationship until my early twenties. I had a series of back-to-back relationships that were never right for me because I knew I was a spiritual being and wanted to live as such. But none of the men I was meeting wanted that.

Finally, in 1985, when my body was 30 years old, I decided to not be in a relationship. Instead I left suburbia and city and went to live in a little village in a forest on a narrow strip of land between a bay and the Pacific Ocean. I wanted to just spend time alone and figure out what I was about and what I wanted so I could have a life partner that was suited to me.

For two years I lived alone in my cottage in the woods, doing a lot of reading.

Then in May of 1987 I gave a lecture at a local venue and a friend of mine came with her boyfriend Larry. After the lecture, they accompanied me to my car and Larry carried my books. We didn’t talk much, but I noticed that he carried my books.

I didn’t see him again until July, after I decided to go on a trip to the British Isles to visit sacred sites. I decided I wanted to paint the interior of my house so I could rent it out if I wanted to, because I had the idea that a big change might happen as a result of this trip and I wanted to have my physical life in order.

My friend made a point to look for men in hardware stores so I always knew her boyfriend of the moment would be handy. So I called her up and asked if she and Larry would come paint my house.

And they did. Every weekend they would come and spend the weekend with me and paint my house.

Larry was very quiet and said very little, so I just talked with my friend. I noticed he was a very good painter.

I think it was the third weekend when my friend said, “You should ask Larry to give you a back massage,”

So after dinner I asked him to do just that. I expected him to walk around to face my back and massage it in the usual way, but instead he put his arms around me and began to gently massage my shoulders.

His touch was so different from any I had ever experienced. I felt like my body was just going to melt into the floor. I thought, “I could have this for the rest of my life.”

In that moment, he was just there with me spirit-to-spirit. It wasn’t about the clothes he was wearing or his job or his car. It was just him and me, spirit-to-spirit, occupying the same space.

Over the next couple of weekends we talked more and spent more time together. My friend realized that Larry really belonged with me and gave her blessing for us to be together. And then we decided to go out on a date on July 28.

On the day of the date, I decided I didn’t want to go out with him that night. I didn’t want to start a relationship. I was going off to have my big adventure in the British Isles and my life was going to change.

So I called him and left a message. And then I went out to dinner and a movie by myself.

When I got home at about 10:00, he was sitting on my doorstep.

Surprised, I asked, “What are you doing here?”

“I’m here for our date. Where have you been?”

I explained I had left him a message that I didn’t want to go on our date and then I went out or the evening by myself.

And then he said, “Do you want me to go or do you want me to stay?”

I somehow understood that he wasn’t asking me if I wanted him to go and come back tomorrow. No. The question was do you want me to go forever or stay forever.

And without thinking about it at all, I looked into his eyes and said, “Stay.”

And he has stayed with me for thirty-three years. So far.

Since I have learned that there is a spirit ability of knowing, simply knowing something. There are no physical facts involved but spirit knows more that physical facts reveal. And Larry turned out to be just the right life partner for me, just the right soul to be my soulmate.

I chose Marc Chagall’s painting “Over the Town” for this post because from the beginning Larry and I had a sense of ourselves being spirits together above and beyond our bodies and the material world. This is our favorite painting.
